I hung out in Etna today. It’s a nice little town with old architecture and plenty of character. I mentioned that to a young local and she said something like ‘They won’t let McDonalds or chains in. They don’t like them. They don’t like anything.’ Anything…
At the Ray’s Food Place, which is a decently large grocery store, I bought supplies for the Etna – Seiad Valley and Seiad Valley – Ashland legs. I’ve been having problems with food, namely being revolted by anything except for potato chips and other veg products imitating potato chips. Nutella and peanut butter are the worst, the absolute worst. Those blasted jars. It’s odd since I didn’t have this problem during other hikes, but I did have the feeling before this hike that I was already sick of everything from the Heysen, even though that was more than a year ago. Maybe my body is rebelling as well since I don’t eat much fat or sugar in everyday life.
I’ve decided to bring more chip products, replace Nutella with hard chocolate, replace peanut butter with almond butter, otherwise switch up nut varieties, and try powdered mashed potatoes for extra salty calories. I hate cooking once per day and imagine that cooking twice will mean twice the hatred, but I’m game in the name of not losing weight. A hiker in Castella told me that she had gained six pounds during her first hike, mostly muscle. I want six pounds of muscle!
